Russia loses 2,030 troops in 24 hours — highest death toll in a day

Russia lost more than 2,030 troops in the last 24 hours — the highest death toll for a single day in the ongoing war, Ukraine’s military claimed Friday.

The record daily high of fatalities surpasses the 1,950 Russian deaths recorded on Nov. 12, according to the Ukrainian General Staff of the Armed Forces.

More than 300 weapons and military equipment were also destroyed overnight by Ukrainian forces, the officials said.

The death toll figure couldn’t be independently verified and Moscow hasn’t publicly commented on the apparent losses.

Ukraine claims more than 738,000 Russian troops have now been killed so far in its nearly two-year war.

The figures emerged as Russia continued its attack on Ukraine’s east — advancing in the Donetsk region at the fastest rate since the early days of the 2022 invasion.

Ukraine’s army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said Friday that he would strengthen troops deployed in the east with reserves, ammunition and equipment.

Despite the Russian onslaught, Syrskyi said Ukrainian forces were continuing to repel Russian advances.

“Based on the results of the work, all necessary decisions have been made to strengthen the units with reserves, additional ammunition, weapons, and military equipment,” he said on the Telegram messaging app.

“We continue to restrain the enemy and inflict heavy losses in terms of their manpower and equipment.”

It comes as the war reached a critical juncture with Russian President Vladimir Putin threatening to target Ukraine’s “decision-making centers” with its new ballistic missile in response to Kyiv using US-supplied missiles to strike back inside Russia.
