Jude Law teases ‘The Holiday’ sequel with Nancy Meyers and Mr. Napkin Head
Don’t toy with our hearts, Nancy.
Jude Law and Nancy Meyers have fans of “The Holiday” on edge after the pair hinted they are working on a sequel to the 2006 romantic comedy, which could see the return of a beloved character — Mr. Napkin Head.
Law, 51, and Meyers, 75, who wrote and directed “The Holiday,” got together on Thursday to celebrate the actor receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That same day, Meyers posted a video of their reunion on Instagram, in which she coyly asked Law about a potential “Holiday” sequel.
“Look who I’m having lunch with today,” the Oscar-nominated filmmaker said in voiceover fashion as the camera panned up from a glass of Champagne and dessert to a dapperly dressed Law, who beamed as he looked across the table at Meyers.
“Congratulations on your so deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That’s amazing.”
“Thanks, Nancy,” he replied. “It’s so lovely to see you.”
“It’s so great to see you,” Meyers added. “I don’t think I’ve seen you since we wrapped up ‘The Holiday.’”
“Speaking of which,” she continued, “I’ve seen you interviewed a lot, and they keep asking you if there’s going to be a sequel, what do you think?”
Law then leaned back, letting out a sigh, lost in thought and he repeated the question, “Is there gonna be a sequel?”
The star then grabbed a white napkin and looked up at Meyers as he pulled the cloth up to his face.
“Uh oh. Uh oh,” Meyers said. “Oh no, here it comes.”
Law went on to place the napkin over his head, and a person off-screen handed him a pair of glasses, which he put on over the linen — reanimating the adored Mr. Napkin Head, an alter ego Law’s character in “The Holiday” created to entertain his children.
Laughing, Meyers asked, “Is that a yes, Jude?”
Two years ago, Meyers said a sequel to “The Holiday” — which also starred Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black — was not in the works.
But a lot can change in two years. And Meyers’ Instagram video sent fans into a frenzy.
“Nancy this is not funny!!! You better not be messing with us!” one person commented.
“For the love of god, please give us a sequel,” another fan wrote. “[W]e are dying without a new Nancy Meyers movie!!!”
“Just casually breaking the internet,” said “Deadpool & Wolverine” producer Simon Kinberg, prompting Meyers to respond with a laughing face emoji.
Kimberly Williams Paisley, who starred in Meyers’ remake of “Father of the Bride,” also showed her support for the possible sequel, leaving three red heart emojis in the comments.
Law’s reprisal of his role as Mr. Napkin Head also excited “The Holiday” fans.
“OH, MY GOODNESS – MR. NAPKIN HEAD!!!!” one person posted.
Someone else shared, “You cannot just interrupt my casual evening with Mr Napkin head in 2024!!! MA’AM!”
“The way I SCREAMED when he picked up the napkin!!” a commenter wrote, while another quipped, “The Holiday: Mr Napkin Head Strikes Again.”
Law recently signaled that he would love to do a “Holiday” sequel, but only if Meyers was on board — making the writer-director’s Instagram video all the more noteworthy.
“Of course I would,” the star told E! News earlier this month when asked about if he would reprise his role as Graham Simpkins. “I mean we’d have to be led by the great Nancy Meyers. She’s unique in her filmmaking. She’s not just a writer-director but she creates that sort of aesthetic, that world and you see it in her other films.”
He continued, “I’m curious, just because there were two very sweet couples and it would be interesting to drop back in now, and just see what they are doing.”
As for the time of year that the movie would take place, Law was clear it would have to be set during the Christmas season.
“Would it be Christmas again? It would have to be,” he said. “You don’t want to see them on a holiday in the sun.”
