John Mayer shares his ‘most valuable thing’ as LA fires destroy city
John Mayer got sentimental over those who have lost everything in the terrifying LA fires that have wreaked havoc on the city this week.
As several deadly blazes continue to burn Los Angeles, leaving more than 200,000 residents to evacuate, Mayer shared his “most valuable thing” while pouring his heart out to the thousands who have lost their homes and the irreplaceable keepsakes that come with that harsh reality.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Mayer, 47, posted an image of a folder and explained, “This is the most valuable thing I own. It’s a folder of photos of my father, spanning his life from being a baby, an educator, a husband and a father. It’s the only evidence of his life that will exist over time.”
He shared, “These are the ‘documents’ you read about people taking from their homes. When you hear someone say they’ve lost everything in a fire, this is much of that everything, if not all of it.”
The “Your Body Is a Wonderland” singer continued, “Those who say they’ll be okay still have their folders and their albums. Those who are inconsolable have lost them. Just behind the immeasurable loss of life is the loss of the proof of life.”
Mayer said he doesn’t practice prayer, but “tonight I will say one for everyone who no longer has these items.”
The Grammy winner argued, “It’s not about the art and the collectibles. It’s the photos, the letters, the class rings, the eyeglasses and the things we keep to remind us that those we loved were here.”
He ended his heartfelt message: “May those who have lost so much find some semblance of hope and support from their family and friends. Stay safe, look out for yourself and for one another, and trust that humanity and all it entails, though sometimes hard to see, is alive and well. This is truly devastating.”
Mayer also shared that he was one of the lucky ones whose home remains as the fires terrorize the city.
“For clarity: I’m safe, extraordinarily lucky to still have my place in LA, but keeping my documents close by. ❤️,” he wrote in the comments.
While Mayer still has his home, thousands of Los Angeles residents, including several celebrities, have lost their property in the uncontrollable infernos.
Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Billy Crystal, Mandy Moore, Tina Knowles, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges, Eugene Levy, and Adam Brody and Leighton Meester are among the A-listers whose homes are gone.
