Bet you thought McDonald’s chicken nuggets couldn’t be improved upon — they’re fun to eat, high in protein, still (relatively) affordable and readily available. What more could a fast food fan want?

Aim higher, say the food experts at Tasting Table, who report that TikTokkers have been lighting up the controversial social media site with a bizarre-sounding hack that’s supposed to send the Golden Arches go-to over the top.

Sure, you know about the nuggets and the sauces that come with them. Some of us can probably recite the options from memory.

But you may end up kicking yourself when you reflect on how many years you’ve lived without knowing how much better both components become when you mix things up a little — literally.

How the so-called upgrade works: You take a couple of the sweet and sour tubs and a packet of mayonnaise and you put it all on top of the nuggets, still in their takeout box.

Close the lid, shake well, and you’ve got the drive-thru equivalent of, say, a dozen sauce-tossed wings or tenders at your favorite sports bar. Except that here, the sauce is sweet and sour and mayonnaise mixed together.

“The resulting creation is one of perfect harmony that touches every corner of the tastebuds,” a Tasting Table reviewer claimed.

“The sweet, tangy, and sour sauce balances the richness of the mayonnaise. Conversely, the tang of the mayonnaise cuts through the sweetness of the sweet and sour, creating a dippable, dunkable duo that balances well against the salty crunch of the nuggets,” they enthused.

Should that not sound like something you’d want to eat, don’t worry — there are numerous other saucy combinations you can try, from honey mustard to tangy buffalo, with or without the addition of mayo.

And while McDonald’s may get a bad rap from fast food haters, you can be confident that the occasional order of nuggets is actually relatively good for you, some experts have claimed.

Yes, even people whose job it is to promote healthy eating extol the nutritional content of the 100% white meat treat — though it must be noted that the pros are less than enthusiastic about the corn-syrup packed sauce selection.

Naked, however, a 10-piece order contains 23 grams of protein — a whopping half of the average recommended dietary allowance.

The edible bundles of joy contain no preservatives, artificial colors or flavors, it has been reported.

In an extensive recent ranking of fast food chicken nuggets published by Eat This, Not That, Mickey D’s took third place — with reviewer Amanda Mactas appreciating the uniform golden brown appearance and the crispiness of each nugget.

“These nuggets are crispy on the outside and both juicy and tender on the inside. The exterior gives just the right amount of crispness without being too bready or overwhelming. Plus, I love that these don’t taste overly salted. Do these taste particularly chicken-y? No. But those classic flavors of childhood really make me enjoy them,” Mactas declared.

Five percent of Americans eat chicken nuggets every day, while 30% of us choose them for dinner once a month, according to Statista.
