Canadian hockey fans boo the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ at NHL game after Trump tariffs announced
Oh, say, can you hear that?
Canadian NHL fans booed the Star Spangled Banner at an Ottawa Senators game Saturday, hours after President Donald Trump’s tariff on the country became official.
Fans at the Canadian Tire Center in Ottawa were none too pleased to hear the national anthem of the USA — booing and jeering as singer Mandia started and ended her rendition of the patriotic US tune, which is performed, along with ‘O, Canada,’ at the start of all NHL games.
When the Canadian-born singer began the song with iconic words, “Oh, say can you see,” the boos came pouring in.
Mandia gracefully ignored the jeers and sang the beautiful song with such conviction that it seemed to quell the crowd into respect.
But, at the end of the performance, a rabble could be heard in the stands as some fans grumbled and a minority of others voiced their support of the States by cheering loudly.
Saturday’s game featured the home team Ottawa Senators facing off against the Minnesota Wild — with the home team routing the American visitor 6-0.
Price-worried and patriotic Canadians were expressing their outrage at President Trump’s 25% tariff on all Canadian goods entering the United States — a tax also levied against Mexico.
The two North American nations fired back on Saturday night after the tariffs were made official — announcing they will be effecting their own tariffs against the United States.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum are working together to push back on the US, they each announced in separate statements Saturday.
The president says that illegal immigrations and drug-trafficking across the northern and southern border are a major reason he instituted the hefty tariffs.
“We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all. I made a promise on my Campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our Borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favor of it,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
