What Mets-Pete Alonso contract means for all parties — including the fans

After a long Cold War of a winter between team and star, that was the way the Mets and Pete Alonso found their way back to each other — emphasis on the sweet spot … especially for the fan base.
Less than a week before the Mets were to open camp with pitchers and catchers, they retained their slugging first baseman. They did it by being as patient in negotiations as Juan Soto is at the plate.
They wanted Alonso back. But not for a long period of time and slowly, over the course of a grinding offseason stare down, they got lineup protection for Soto at a term that worked for them. The deal is for two years at $54 million. Alonso has an opt-out after a 2025 in which he will make $30 million, so perhaps this all will be repeated several months from now.
