Baby name expert reveals what you’ll see in the next decade — including Pippit and Hawk

A name expert predicts the baby monikers on the rise in the next decade — and says millennial names such as Heather and Danny are now “unfashionable”.

Sophie Kihm, 27, has predicted the top 100 fastest rising names for 2025 to 2035.

She says we will start to see more names with a link to heritage — such as ‘Fia’ and ‘Yuna’.

Sophie also says nature names continue to be on the rise — with names such as ‘Pippit’, ‘Lark’ and ‘Hawk’ becoming popular.

But the editor at Nameberry — a website devoted to baby names — says millennial names such as Ashley, Heather, Ellen, and Danny are declining in popularity.

Sophie, from Chicago, Illinois, US, said: “Millennial names and Gen X names are unfashionable right now.

“Ashley, Heather, Megan, Ellen — names that were popular with this generation of moms.

“For boys Clayton, Justin, Preston and Danny feel a bit older.”

Sophie has predicted what names which are not in the top 1,000 yet will break into it by 2035.

She said: “Fia is a name that really appeals everywhere.

“Were seeing that as a rising trend around the world that parents are more interested in going back to heritage.

“It was one of the fastest growing names in the UK last year.

“Yuna I think is really gorgeous. It has a lot of different origins in Asian countries.

“Laith is Arabic and Scottish — it’s a very hands on name.”

Sophie said we’ve already started to see a rise with names using the syllable ‘ice’.

She said: “People have been using Iceland.

“Iceylnn is going to be a fast riser.

“Parents like mixing and matching.

“Ice became a cool syllable.”

For boys names, Sophie sees ‘Chosen’ becoming popular but spelt ‘Chozyn’.

She said: “It feels really extreme.

“But Chozen was a fast growing name in the US last year because of a pop culture Anime character.”

Sophie claims pop culture can have a big influence on fast growing names in that year — and predicts Townes may be big for 2025 after Hilary Duff gave her son the moniker.

She said: “Influencer babies make a big difference.

“Zoe Sugg named her child Novie — I’ve seen people talking more about that.

“Nova is already popular. It blends Nova and Jovie and feels a bit sweeter.”

Sophie also sees traditionally male names such as ‘Gianni’ as being used more by parents for their daughters in the future.

She also predicts that while not on the fastest rising list nature names will continue to have popularity.

She said: “Bird names are really popular — names like Pipit.

“I think it is really cute.

“P’s have a lot of energy and it combines that energy with a birds name.

“Lark is trending right now.

“Birdie is rising in the US and UK — it’s fashionable but has a vintage feel.”

The names that are falling are names from the millennial generation.

She said: “Names go in roughly 100 year cycles.

“Once a generation with a certain name dies it starts to be used again.

“Flash in the pan names like Brooklyn for a girl or Solone are names that are trendy for one year.”
