Philly woman dies after tree falls on her car from wind

One woman is dead in Philadelphia after a powerful wind gust toppled a tree that landed on her car Sunday night — as fierce, up to 60 mph winds continue to whip the Northeast.

The woman was in her gray Honda Accord when the tree crashed into it in northeast Philly.

Firefighters were seen removing the massive tree from the car, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, CBS reported.

Forecasters warned that strong winds would last into Monday night throughout much of the East Coast and Northeast.

“Much of that region has the threat to see wind gusts anywhere from up to 50 to 60 miles per hour,” Fox Forecast Center Meteorologist Cody Braud told The Post.

The strong western winds will last for the bulk of the day, though the powerful gusts will be much less frequent, Braud said.

“They are very occasional and it’s all due to the storm that moved through yesterday,” Braud said, noting that as the storm left it brought colder air into the region.

The brutal wind chill in New York City will make temps feel in the low 20s all day.

“That cold air is above the surface, it’s very dense, and it’s racing toward the surface so you’re getting this resurgence of cold air that’s wanting to quickly move to the ground, and that’s why we’re seeing these high winds today,” he explained.

Parts of Long Island, Connecticut and Westchester County had already recorded wind gusts between 40 to nearly 60 miles an hour by early Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Those regions will experience west winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. The wind advisory will be in effect until 6 p.m. Monday.

“The biggest threat is occasional power outages,” Braud added, noting the incident in Philadelphia was an anomaly. “Trying to travel in and out of major airports may be difficult. You’re going to see a lot of ground delays and ground stops today just due to the wind.”

Newark Liberty International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport were both experiencing brief departure delays of less than half an hour Monday morning, though FlightAware data warned the average delays were increasing.

Flights heading to Newark were also experiencing an average delay of about an hour and a half due to the wind.

Meanwhile, LaGuardia Airport was experiencing inbound flights averaging delays of about two hours due to winds, while departures were only delayed between 16 to 30 minutes.

Delays at LaGuardia were also expected to increase due to the wind.
