Joy Behar asks Sara Haines about ‘lesbian relationship’ live on The View
Joy Behar stuck her foot in her mouth when she asked about her co-star Sara Haines’ alleged former “lesbian” experience — on live television and in front of her parents!
The 82-year-old dropped the intimate bombshell during the “Hot Topics” on “The View” on Wednesday.
While co-host Whoopi Goldberg, 68, was plugging Haines’ upcoming appearance on the program’s “Behind the Table” podcast, Behar boldly interrupted to air out their colleague’s alleged college romance with another woman.
“It’s crazy, but Sara is on the podcast today with her fabulous parents, who are here with us today,” Goldberg told the live studio audience and viewers at home as the camera panned to Haines’ parents in the crowd.
That’s when Behar jumped in.
“I have to ask her a question,” she interrupted. “Are you going to bring up that lesbian relationship you said you had, back at Smith [College]?”
Haines, 47, seemed shocked over the question — but everyone laughed it off, including her parents.
“Dad, earmuffs! Earmuffs!” she shouted at her mom and dad.
Their “View” co-star Alyssa Farah Griffin, 35, reminded Behar, “That was off-air that she told us that,” as Sunny Hostin, 56, cracked a joke, saying, “Now it’s on-air!”
The ladies and audience erupted in laughter while Haines quickly did damage control.
“It’s a good thing my dad doesn’t always watch,” she joked, as she appeared to forgive Behar’s slip of the tongue that appeared to be all in good fun.
The Post contacted a representative for “The View” for comment.
Haines is no stranger to the LGBTQ+ community despite growing up in a conservative household.
In 2016, she revealed that she was part of a gay volleyball league in college with her brother, who is gay.
“I was raised in an extremely conservative household in Iowa and did not come away unaffected by that, she told TV Insider in 2016. But I went to Smith College, which leans left, and I once substituted for my brother, who is gay, on a New York volleyball team of all-gay men and never left the league.
“So now I have more gay friends than straight ones. Combine all that and it leaves me somewhere in the middle. I’m a melting pot of beliefs.”
Despite her alleged lesbian relationship in college, Haines is married to a man and has been ever since saying “I do” to Max Shifrin in 2014. The couple share three children: sons Alec, 8, and Caleb, 5, and daughter Sandra, 6.
“The View” airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.
