‘Outer Banks’ Season 4, Part 2 Ending Explained: Does JJ Die? And Is Sarah Pregnant?
It’s been an emotional day for Outer Banks fans. If you’re like me and you already binged Season 4, Part 2, I can understand if you’re still staring at your TV screen, mouth agape, asking, “What the heck just happened?!” Things certainly didn’t go how many of us would’ve liked for the Pogues this season — but if you’re still confused, fortunately, we are here to break it all down for you.
John B (Chase Stokes), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), JJ (Rudy Pankow), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) have been around the world and back in search of gold and other treasure — and they are just barely out of high school! This season is no different, with the rag-tag team of Pogues finding themselves in Morocco as they search for Blackbeard’s treasure — the Blue Crown, a 3,000-year-old artifact that, if the legend holds true, grants its wearer invincibility.
So, what happened in Outer Banks Season 4, Part 2? Who dies? And was the internet right about Sarah being pregnant? Keep reading for everything you need to know:
Outer Banks Season 4, Part 2 plot summary:
Outer Banks Season 4, Part 2 picks up with JJ learning about his true heritage. According to Luke — the man who raised him and who he believed to be his father his entire life — JJ is the biological son of Chandler Groff and Larissa Genrette. Just after Larissa had died in a “drowning” incident, Chandler bribed Luke to take care of JJ as a baby, meaning he’s, by blood, a Kook.
Upon learning this information, JJ and his friends must fight to keep Poguelandia — a.k.a. the Maybank property they purchased at auction in Part 1 — after local Kooks change the zoning and threaten to take it away from them. Unfortunately, they’re unable to succeed (no surprise there) and JJ goes on a rampage, inciting a riot in the town and vandalizing local businesses. Now on the run, JJ decides to confront Chandler about whether or not he’s his true father. While Chandler denies it at first, he ultimately fesses up when Dalia and her crew of treasure-hunting scoundrels capture them.
With the help of his fellow Pogues, JJ is able to escape with the scroll from Part 1 in hand. And when he reunites with Chandler, he learns that it’s the map that leads to the Blue Crown — which can only be read through a specific lens hidden in his mother’s grave. Together, they retrieve the lens — but Chandler eventually shows his true colors when he tries to kill JJ and abandons him in the middle of the ocean. That’s when we learn that Chandler was actually the one who killed Larissa and all those other folks who have been turning up dead this season.

Meanwhile, Pope is facing felony charges after he tackles a cop to the ground in an attempt to save JJ’s life. The only way for him to avoid prison time is by joining the Marines. However, he breaks free of his ankle monitor and is able to join his friends in finding Groff, who now possesses the map, and the Blue Crown. But first, they must promise to return Groff, now a wanted man, to Shoop if he lets them off the hook. That’s how they end up hitching a ride with Rafe on his boat to Morocco. Rafe is also in search of Groff, who swindled him out of $400,000 over a phony business dealing. His teaming up with the Pogues was surely unexpected, but definitely not the most shocking thing to happen in Season 4.
Outer Banks Season 4, Part 2 ending explained:
When they finally arrive in Morocco, they, of course, hit some bumps in the road — mostly due to Dalia and her armed team of treasure hunters. But in the end, JJ is able to successfully find the Blue Crown — and through a dust storm, nonetheless! Unfortunately, finding the treasure and professing his love for Kiara are the last two things he ever does. JJ is ultimately killed by Chandler — and the season ends with Kie vowing to get her revenge. Hello, Season 5!
Who dies in Outer Banks Season 4, Part 2?
JJ Maybank meets his heartbreaking fate when, just after he hands the Blue Crown over to Chandler Groff and proclaims he has everything he needs in his life, he is fatally stabbed by his biological father.
