1-month-old abandoned on Colo. road had cocaine in system: family
A 1-month-old baby who was abandoned on a Colorado road median by his parents on Christmas Day had cocaine in his system, heartbroken family members said.
Police in Adams County received a 911 call around 9:20 am Wednesday morning about a baby left alone in a car seat in nothing but a diaper in the median of Pecos Street, which is a busy roadway near US Highway 36, Fox 31 reported.
The baby’s parents, Jarvis Sims, 42, and Christina Thurman, 33, were arrested that night and charged with felony child abuse.
Thurman’s family said that the baby boy, named Xion, had cocaine in his system. He was dumped on the roadway after his parents fought that morning, they told the station.
“We were so ready for this baby to have his first Christmas, the greatest Christmas … That’s what the first Christmas is, the greatest time. We didn’t even get that, it got stolen from us,” said Destiny Aguirre, Thurman’s cousin and Xion’s godmother.
“What if he would have died? You’re going to leave him in the middle of the street and then what? So he could die a slow death in the cold? That is not right,” she added, choking up.
Aguirre noted that she only lives about 10 blocks away from Thurman.
Xion is now in Child Protective Services’ care and is expected to be OK.
Thurman’s mother, April Aragon, said they are “trying everything to get the baby back.”
“He belongs with family. Her other three kids are here with us, why can’t the baby be? Any one of us is willing to take that baby and make sure he is with who he belongs, with his family,” Aragon said.
“It’s my grandbaby’s first Christmas [and he’s] with a stranger.”
