‘Back in Action’ Director Seth Gordon Teases His Next Project: A “Crazy” Doc About Ruby Slippers From ‘Wizard Of Oz’

Director Seth Gordon—who launched his Hollywood career with the cult-hit arcade doc The King of Kong in 2007—is returning to documentary with a new film about the ruby slippers, tentatively titled Under the Rainbow.

In an interview with Decider to promote his new Netflix action comedy, Back in Action, Gordon revealed he has been working on a documentary about what are considered to be one of the most valuable pieces of movie paraphernalia of all time: The ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz.

“[The slippers] were stolen by these guys in the mafia, and they just sold, a couple of weeks ago, for $28 million,” Gordon told Decider. The director added that he has been working on the documentary for upwards of 15 years. “It’s been a crazy one.”

“You know how it is with documentaries—one of the hardest decisions is when to stop filming,” Gordon said. “But we have had some remarkable things happen in the last couple of months. So I think we can start buttoning it up.”

The director said he is “definitely going to try to put it out into the world sometime this year,” under the working title Under the Rainbow.

The timing couldn’t be more perfect. The first part of Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of Wicked, aka the musical about the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz, has raked in over $708 million at the worldwide box office, and is expected to nab an Oscar nomination for Best Picture later this week. Clearly, people are craving Oz content.

Gordon, who just came off of directing and co-writing Back in Action—the new Netflix movie starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz that began streaming last week—also said he is enjoying working on the “complete opposite” of the big, ambitious action flick he just put into the world.

“Instead of having a crew of 200, I’m doing the audio, I’m schlepping the camera around, I’m drawing the graphics,” Gordon said. “I might be ready, after that’s over, to do another ambitious narrative.”

For fans of Gordon’s first documentary, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, there’s more good news: A sequel documentary, Arcades & Love Songs: The Ballad Of Walter Day., is coming “very soon,” according to the director. Though Gordon did not direct this time, he is a producer. Ed Cunningham (known for his football documentary Undefeated) directs.
