Buccaneers’ Chris Godwin carted off field after gruesome injury
Chris Godwin suffered what appeared to be a serious injury and had to be carted off the field with a minute to play in the Buccaneers’ 41-31 “Monday Night Football” showdown loss to Ravens.
Godwin had caught a pass over the middle from Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield before being taken down by a Ravens defender around Tampa’s 39-yard line.
It was clear that the wide receiver was in intense pain as he could barely lift himself up before remaining on the ground with his head against the field as teammates came over to check on him.
“Oh no,” ESPN broadcaster Joe Buck uttered as the camera zoomed in on Godwin. “He can’t get up.”
The Buccaneers believe he dislocated his ankle, according to ESPN.
It appeared that Godwin’s lower left leg had been trapped under Roquan Smith’s body as he was taken down and his ankle appeared to bend in an awkward position.
Team trainers could be seen quickly arriving to check on Godwin.
After being looked at by the trainers Godwin was placed in an air cast and was placed on a cart to be removed from the field.
The Buccaneers had trailed 41-31 at the time of the injury and he was given a standing ovation as the cart went down the tunnel toward the Tampa locker room.
Godwin had seven receptions for 65 yards and entered Monday night’s game as one of the top receivers in yards and receptions in the NFL.
His five touchdown catches are tied for the second most in the league.
To add insult to injury, the Bucs had already lost Mike Evans to an injury earlier in the night when he got hurt trying to make a touchdown catch late in the second quarter.
He was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game.
The loss to the Ravens on Monday night dropped Tampa Bay down to 4-3 on the season.
