Charlotte Nicdao Jokes She Got Pregnant “For The Bit” During ‘Mythic Quest’ Season 4: “Just The Picture Of It Is Funny To Me”

Charlotte Nicdao says she didn’t get pregnant specifically to give her Mythic Quest character a hilarious storyline for Season 4, but it certainly didn’t hurt.
Sitting down with DECIDER alongside her Mythic Quest co-star, David Hornsby, the Aussie-born actress shared that when it comes to Poppy’s surprise pregnancy — revealed at the end of Episode 4, “The Villain’s Feast” — she was not as surprised as the rest of the world was.
“I actually had an inkling of the direction that Poppy’s storyline was going this season because I was the one that made the call to the writers as the room started to let them know that I was pregnant and I would probably be pregnant while we were filming,” Nicdao explained.
According to the actress, while she was more than willing to hide her real-life baby bump to keep Poppy’s storyline for Season 4 more in line with what the audience might expect, she secretly hoped that the writers would include it. Poppy — a hot mess who has had very little in the way of a personal life up until this season — could not be more out of place in the realm of motherhood.
“I’m really glad that you guys went with putting it in the show because I feel like it gives a whole new dimension to Poppy,” Nicdao said to Hornsby, who also serves as EP on the Apple TV+ comedy series. “It’s a completely new adventure for her. It’s funny, even when I got pregnant and I was thinking about it, I was like, ‘This would be so funny to see Poppy be pregnant.’ Just the picture of it is funny to me.”
Hornsby added, “So, she got pregnant for the bit.”
While Episode 5 (“Second Skeleton”) confirms without question that Poppy has a bun in the oven, the realization of her pregnancy actually came at the end of Episode 4. The bottle episode ends with Poppy connecting the dots — sensitivity to smell, throwing up on the boat, food items tasting weird, etc. — and discovering that a baby is indeed on the way. It’s a surprise not only because Poppy is, well, Poppy, but because she is still very early into her relationship with Storm (Chase Yi).
For what it’s worth, Nicdao wasn’t alone in thinking that a pregnant Poppy would make for great television, though. Mythic Quest co-creator Megan Ganz recently told Decider that when the actress approached the writers, it was like a lightning bolt moment given the opportunity to create a storyline no one would expect coming.
“When Charlotte told us she was pregnant, we were like, ‘This is amazing because you’re the last character anybody would think would get pregnant in the show,’” Ganz said in our interview, adding, “Actually, that’s the funniest character to write for that storyline.”
When it comes to how Poppy moves forward with the news and what comes next for the Mythic Quest characters, fans are just going to have to tune in to see what’s ahead.
The first five episodes of Mythic Quest are currently streaming on AppleTV+. New episodes release Wednesdays.
