Shortlisted for the upcoming Oscars in the Best Documentary category, MTV Documentary’s “Black Box Diaries” will screen at MoMA, 11 West 53rd Street, as part of their annual series The Contenders, which honors the best movies of the year.

A remarkable work of cinema verite, disturbingly immersive and heartbreaking, journalist Shiori Itō turns the camera on herself to investigate her own sexual assault and the viral effects it caused around the country. Precisely edited and narrated as an intensely dramatic #metoo thriller, it revolves around her painful quest for justice and yhe launch of a book telling her experience. Screens on Tuesday, January 7 at 7 pm followed by a live conversation with director Shiori Itō. The film also becomes available to stream on Paramount+ on the same day. Led by Artistic Directors Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy, along with Choreographic Associate Ashwini Ramaswamy, Ragamala Dance Company returns to The Joyce Theater, 175 Eighth Avenue, marking 30 years as ambassadors of the poetry and musicality of South Indian Bharatanatyam traditional dances. Performing January 8-12, the company will feature “Children of Dharma”, a contemplative and spiritual new work that reimagines three central characters (mother and daughters) of the Hindu epic The Mahabharata, giving audiences a unique opportunity to experience the ritual. Honoring those lost on the Holocaust and remembering through music, Wharton Arts presents “A Concert for Peace” with New Jersey Youth Symphony Violins of Hope. A symbol of survival and perseverance, these restored violins were played by prisoners of ghettos and death camps, and now serve as music instruments of harmony and peace, inspiring hope with their concerts.
