Ex-Jet, $51 million free agent Bryce Huff inactive for Eagles in Super Bowl 2025

Ex-Jet, $51 million free agent Bryce Huff inactive for Eagles in Super Bowl 2025

Bryce Huff’s roller coaster season with the Eagles — his first away from the Jets after inking a three-year, $51 million deal in free agency — came to a crashing halt Sunday, as the edge rusher was one of Philadelphia’s inactives for Super Bowl 2025 against the Chiefs in New Orleans.

He was an Eagles’ splash signing of the offseason, one pegged to add to their already stout defense, but instead, Huff’s first campaign in Philadelphia will end with 13 tackles and 2.5 sacks across 14 games and six starts.

Last year, Huff, a undrafted free agent in 2020, broke out under then-Jets head coach Robert Saleh and then-defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich with 10.0 sacks — positioning himself for a major payday.

Huff told The Post’s Ryan Dunleavy earlier this week, though, that “I haven’t changed one bit” despite the stark drop-off in numbers.

“It’s not like I have to become that dominant player again,” Huff told Dunleavy. “I’m him right now. I’m still him.”

But on the biggest stage of the NFL season, Huff didn’t even have a chance to log snaps, joining Eli Ricks, Lewis Cine, Darian Kinnard, Trevor Keegan and Ainias Smith as inactives for their showdown against the Chiefs.

He collected one defensive snap during the Eagles’ wild-card round win over the Packers, didn’t play the following week against the Rams and appeared on the field for 12 snaps in the NFC Championship game win against the Commanders — but didn’t record any stats.

“It was almost unreal how it’s been one thing after another,” Huff told Dunleavy. “I’m going to keep grinding because that’s what I can control. Hopefully, I do find a way to get more playing time one way or another next year.”

So the gradual development that turned into a breakthrough hit a roadblock in 2024.

And with Nolan Smith, the linebacker Huff lost his starting job to this season, just 24 years old, it’s unclear what Huff’s route to increased playing time next year will be with the Eagles and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Sunday, and his absence in the Super Bowl, was just the latest — and most glaring — reminder yet.
