GOP Rep pushes to move federal border agency from DC to Texas

A Republican Texas congressman wants the nation’s key border enforcement agency relocated from Washington, DC, to the Lone Star State.

Rep. Keith Self introduced a bill Monday that would force the 2,000-mile move of the Customs and Border Protection headquarters, calling it “a practical step that will allow America’s Border Patrol agents to be on the ground at the critical point of the crisis” while reducing operational costs.

Self said he was inspired to make the push because of the incoming Trump administration’s plans to enhance border security and crack down on illegal crossings, which hit record levels under the Biden administration.

“For four years, the Biden administration opened our southern border to over 10 million illegal aliens, including murderers, gang members, and suspected terrorists — forcing Texas to be their gateway,” the pol said.

“Americans overwhelmingly responded to this crisis on November 5th , 2024, with a clear mandate,” he said, referring to Election Day, when Donald Trump was voted in as president. “This mandate begins with fixing our broken border. Under President Trump, CBP will immediately begin to seal our border and halt the flood of illegal aliens.”

Trump has already expressed his intentions to move up to 100,000 federal jobs out of the nation’s capital.

“We will continue the effort launched by the Trump administration to move parts of the sprawling federal bureaucracy to new locations outside the Washington Swamp,” Trump said on his campaign website last year.

“And I mean immediately out of Washington to places filled with patriots who love America, and they really do love America,” he added.

He has tapped former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott to head CBP as its commissioner.

Scott declined to comment on Self’s bill when reached by The Post.

During his first term in the White House, Trump successfully moved the Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service to Kansas City, Mo., and the Bureau of Land Management to Colorado, according to the Dallas Morning News.

President Biden later relocated the Land Management office back to DC.
