Hochul says Trump’s tariffs on Canada will hurt NY businesses
President Trump’s tariff war with New York’s neighbor Canada will hurt businesses and consumers in the state, Gov. Kathy Hochul claimed Sunday.
“Canada and New York State are really part of one region,” Hochul said on MSNBC’s “The Weekend” program.
New York’s borders the Montreal-Quebec and Toronto-Ontario regions. The Peace Bridge connects Buffalo with Fort Erie, Ontario.
“Canada, and this is not a surprise, is talking about retaliatory tariffs on our products. Our businesses are going to feel this immediately,” Hochul said.
“Why are we doing this?”
She said New York is an economic engine for the country, so a tariff war will have a “ripple effect” across the country.
“This is going to be an additional tax on New York residents and American residents. I don’t see a way around it,” the governor said.
Hochul hoped that Trump’s tariffs are a temporary act to get Canada and Mexico’s attention to help address the fentanyl crisis. She noted she has put more resources on the northern border to crack down on fentanyl smuggling.
Trump slapped a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada this weekend. He acknowledged that the levy could cause “pain” for Americans, but said “it will all be worth it.”
