The wildly extravagant, contagiously exuberant dance company MOMIX brings their new magical show ALICE to Newark’s NJPAC (1 Center Street) on Sunday, January 26 at 7pm.

Led by Artistic Director and choreographer Moses Pendleton, the company’s take on the family-friendly classic tale includes transforming the dancers into characters such as White Rabbits, Mad Hatters, Queen of Hearts and more. For over 40 years, Momix has been delivering whimsical spectacles with acrobatics, which highlights their remarkable inventive style. A crosscut between the surreal, the magical and the limitless effects of modern dance, Momix heats up the temperatures with their distinguished energy and artistry influenced by the physical demands of circus. Billy Childs is among the greatest American pianists of our times. Known for his versatile techniques and deeply emotional expression, he is an eight-time Grammy winner and had collaborated with J.J. Johnson, Wynton Marsalis, Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, and many others, proving his ability from classical to contemporary. On Saturday, February 8, at 7:30pm he will make his debut at Miller Theatre (2960 Broadway at 116th Street, Columbia University) along with his all-star quartet formed by Sean Jones, Matt Penman and Ari Hoenig. Final days to view one of the most popular artworks of the 20th century, The Swimming Pool, created by the French artist Henry Matisse in the late 1940’s when he decided to use wallpaper and scissors as his essential creative tools. Matisse’s Cut-Outs: A Celebration is on view thru January 20 on the 4th floor, after being shown for 5 years at MoMA, 11 West 53rd Street. It is a sensitive, white and blue abstract and impactful decorative work originally used to cover the artist’s dining room that remains as one of the most beautiful artworks of all times. A unique fusion of capoeira, contemporary dance, martial arts and Afro-street, the fabulous Compagnie Hervé KOUBI returns to The Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue, 19th Street) with their astonishing renowned work “What the Day Owes to the Night”, conceived by choreographer Koubi as a tribute to his Algerian roots and inspired by Algerian author Yasmina Khadra’s eponymous novel. Formed by 13 dancers from Algeria and Burkina Faso with music by Bach, Hanza El Dim and traditional Sufi music it’s a unique and seductive experience. Performances are from Tuesday, January 28 thru Sunday, February 2.
