Some of the most exciting and innovative new world music artists are coming to GlobalFest 2025, taking place Sunday January 12 at 7 pm at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center.
Celebrating their 22nd anniversary, GlobalFest features 10 performances and an Award Ceremony which gathers professional artists, musicians, producers and world music enthusiasts. The hot 2025 lineup includes Portuguese/Cabo Verdian sensation Elida Almeida, Akshara Music Ensemble from India, Rebolu hailing from Colombia, Zar Electrik from Morocco and Spanish revelation Maruja Limón among others. Make it an early Valentines celebration with the return of Boyz II Men, the fantastic, dancing and sexy R&B group, to NJPAC in Newark. Playing the soundtrack of everyone’s romantic memories, the Philadelphia-based, multiple Grammy Award winning group formed by baritone Nathan Morris, and tenors Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman will perform their most popular hits such as “I’ll Make Love to You”, “One Sweet Day” and “On Bended Knee” as well as some surprising songs on Wednesday, January 15 at 8pm. Continuing its 25th anniversary of Composer Portraits series, Miller Theater (Columbia University, 2960 Broadway at 116th Street) presents the work of Swedish composer Lisa Streich. Currently serving as composer-in-residence with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival, she is known for her unique beautiful music. The concert on Thursday February 6 at 7:30pm will feature three original works, including “Orchestra of Black Butterflies”, the US Premiere of an original Miller Theatre/Venice Biennale commissioned piece. Performed by violinist Miranda Cuckson and Yarn/Wire. Presented with the support by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. Tickets start at $20. Located at the corner of 19th Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan, The Joyce Theater continues to showcase the best in contemporary world dance, featuring new shows of established artists and also promising new names. To kick off the new year, dance lovers can explore Ragamala Dance Company, performing January 8-12, with the latest work by mother-daughters Bharatanatyam artists Aparna Ramaswamy, Ranee Ramaswamy, and Ashwini Ramaswamy, Children of Dharma exploring spiritual themes through three characters from the Hindu epic The Mahabharata.
Next week, Brooklyn-based, Afro-Cuban influenced Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE celebrates 40 years of honoring the traditions and rhythms of the African diaspora with a double program January 14-19. Among the highlights, the company will perform a restaging of Serving Nia and the 25th anniversary performance of groudbreaking masterpiece Grace. Tickets start at $10. The Museum of Modern Arts, 11 West 53rd Street, presents To Save and Project: The 21st International Festival of Film Preservation January 9-30.
