Spoilers ahead for the Season 4 finale of “Only Murders in the Building.”
This season’s victim — or rather, one of its victims (more on that later) — was Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), the faithful stunt double to Steve Martin’s washed-up TV PI, Charles-Haden Savage. And after ten episodes of red herrings, murder boards and romance (yes, romance), “OMITB” tied up the loose ends scattered around the Arconia — the show’s titular apartment building — and answered questions plaguing fans all season long. Not just, ‘who is the killer?’ but also, “was there more than one killer?” and, “was Charles the intended target?”
Here’s a breakdown of everything we learned in “OMITB” Season 4, episode 10, titled, “My Best Friend’s Wedding” — the who, what, when and why. And with some bonus bits.
Whodunnit?!
The killer turned out to be none other than Marshall P. Pope (Jin Ha), the screenwriter behind the “Only Murders in the Building” movie being made about the podcast (on the show). But Pope is a fraud — his real identity is Rex Bailey, a washed-up stuntman who Sazz took under her wing until he burned off Ron Howard’s eyebrows and became persona non grata in the stunt world.
As we find out at the end of episode 9, the “Only Murders” movie script that made Hollywood come calling was actually written by Sazz as a love letter to her longtime No. 1, Charles. Bailey, who fell into stunt-work (literally) after he failed to “make it” as a writer, stole Sazz’s script and invented a new alter ego, Marshall P. Pope, to claim the work as his own.
When Sazz learned Bailey sold the script under his new nom de plume, she raked him over the coals, explaining she would never have sold the script without getting Charles’ blessing. Furious and disappointed, Sazz then told Bailey that she’s going to let Charles know what Bailey did and, as a result, ruin the upstart’s career.
Unfortunately for Sazz, Bailey killed her before she could speak with Charles.
But who killed Glenn Stubbins?
Sazz may have been Season 4’s first victim, but she was not its last. Glen Stubbins (Paul Rudd), the stunt double for Season 3’s victim, Ben Glenroy (also Paul Rudd), died in the penultimate episode of the fourth season. Pope / Bailey confessed in the Season 4 finale that he killed Stubbins because the Irishman could have identified the writer as also being the stuntperson who Sazz told one of the Arconia’s “Westies,” Helga (Alexandra Templer), would be the death of her.
What happened to Marshall P. Pope / Rex Bailey?
Pope / Bailey is shot and killed at the hands of none other than Season 1’s killer, Jan Bellows (Amy Ryan), who also dated both Charles and Sazz.
Earlier in the season, Jan escaped from prison (where she was serving time for killing Season 1’s victim Tim Kono) and broke into Charles’ apartment, scaring the sh-t out of Charles in the process. Though it seemed Jan fled the Arconia shortly after, it turns out she never left. She hid in Charles’ coat closet and the Arconia’s hidden passageways, biding her time til she could exact revenge on the man who killed her former lover.
Was Charles the intended target?
No. Season 4 played into the connection between Charles and Sazz to throw viewers off the killer’s scent. After all, Sazz, who always dresses identically to Charles, was found murdered in Charles’ apartment. But in the end, this turned out to be a red herring, as Sazz was the killer’s intended victim.
Ok, but what about Oliver and Loretta’s wedding?
Despite Oliver’s panicking, his and Loretta’s wedding went off without a hitch. Loretta did not die and after sharing a brief honeymoon in the Arconia, Oliver saw her off as she departed for New Zealand, where her TV show is now filming. Oliver promised Loretta he would move to New Zealand in a few weeks’ time, even though it will mean leaving his podcasting besties behind.
Will there be a Season 5?
Yes, “OMITB” has already been picked up for a fifth season.
Do we know the identity of Season 5’s victim?
The victim at the center of “OMITB” Season 5 is none other than lovable Lester, the Arconia’s doorman, played by Teddy Coluca. Just as Charles, Oliver and Mabel think they’ve solved one murder without stumbling upon another, they discover Lester’s blood-soaked body in the fountain at the center of the Arconia’s courtyard — which happens to be not only where Oliver and Loretta tied the knot the day before, but also where Lester said his “I do”s.
Where can I watch the “OMITB” Season 4 finale?
Season 4 finale of “Only Murders in the Building” is now streaming on Hulu.
