Russell Wilson speaks out on Steelers future after loss to Ravens

Russell Wilson hopes to build off “one of the best years” of his life by running it back in Pittsburgh.

Speaking to the media Saturday after the Steelers’ 28-14 wild-card playoff loss to the Ravens, the 36-year-old quarterback — who signed a one-year deal with the team last March — expressed a desire to remain with Pittsburgh as free agency looms.

“The Pittsburgh Steelers organization man, it’s been such a blessing to be here. The guys that we have, the organization is truly first class. Love the city, obviously, what it means, not just to me and [wife] Ciara and our family, but just also the National Football League, it’s a special place with special guys and we got a special coach in Coach Tomlin,” Wilson said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“We got a special organization with special people, special players and a special fanbase. It’s been truly a blessing in my life, it’s been one of the best years for me personally, to be a Pittsburgh Steeler. Obviously I hope I’m here.”

Named the Steelers’ starter out of training camp, Wilson was sidelined for the first six weeks while dealing with a calf issue, paving the way for former first-round pick Justin Fields to open the season under center.

Fields, who began his career with the Bears in 2021, threw five touchdowns and one interception while guiding the Steelers to a 4-2 start.

Coach Mike Tomlin shook up the lineup with Wilson’s return in October, giving him the keys over Fields, 25.

Despite Wilson’s hot 6-1 start controlling the offense, the Steelers concluded the regular season on a four-game skid that began in December.

Their 2024-25 campaign ended Saturday when their AFC North rival bounced them from the postseason.

Tomlin was asked about the future at quarterback for the Steelers following the team’s season-ending loss.

“I’m not ready to take a big-picture approach. You know, I’m really assessing what happened today, and I’m certainly appreciative of the efforts tonight, but I can say that largely for the entire season,” he said, as covered by Bleacher Report.

“They’re two quality people, three quality people at the quarterback position, and really appreciate what they poured into this.”

Fields, who was traded to the Steelers last offseason by the Bears, will be a free agent, as well as fellow backup quarterback Kyle Allen.

Wilson wrapped his first season in Pittsburgh by throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions in 11 games.

He arrived in Pittsburgh following a two-season stint with the Broncos. Wilson started his career with the Seahawks in 2012 and won one Super Bowl with Seattle.
