Tony Massarotti blasts Triston Casas over Red Sox third base comments

Triston Casas should have probably kept his mouth shut in the midst of chaotic positional turmoil within the Red Sox clubhouse.

Boston radio host Tony Massarotti said this week that Red Sox first baseman should “shut his pie hole” regarding the now controversial signing of Alex Bregman, which has caused a major stir over who will play third base.

“Shut your pie hole. Shut your pie hole. This guy knows everything. I’ve been saying this for a couple of years. He knows everything. He’s got the answers to everything. He knows it all,” Massarotti said. “He knows, again, he goes through his deliberate routine in the batter’s box, don’t you know? Get in a certain time, every time, counts the pitch clock down, gets ready to go. When he fields a ball in a certain situation, he’s already done all the calculations in his head — even if he makes the wrong decision and tries to get the wrong guy out at third base when there isn’t a force play involved.”

The Red Sox first baseman was asked by reporters this week whether newly acquired Bregman or Rafael Devers should play third base, and he sided with his longtime teammate.

“It’s Raffy Devers’ position,” Casas said Tuesday. “He’s the third baseman and at that point, that’s where it stands, and he’s done it for a really long time now and he’s only getting better at the position. His defense is getting better every single year, we don’t know what the future holds but we know it holds Raffy Devers.”

Massarotti was infuriated by Casas response.

“He is, oh my gosh, does he have all the answers?” Massarotti added. “…This guy’s an a-hole. He’s an a-hole… Seriously, this kid’s got his head up his ass.

“He is now Red Sox assistant general manager, first baseman and player/coach — Triston Casas, holding all three positions and titles. I left out scout. I left out that he’s also an organizational scout. He wears many hats in the Red Sox organization, does Triston Casas.”

Devers has refused to move off third base, while manager Alex Cora didn’t exactly guarantee he would keep that position.

“We’re gonna make decisions based on competition and roster flexibility and versatility, and we’re gonna take our best 26 guys to Texas (for Opening Day),” Cora said, adding that Casas, “said what he said.”

Casas had an uneven 2024, playing in just 63 games and hitting .241 when healthy to go along with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs.
