Shocking video shows an Iranian woman stripping off and jumping naked on a police car in an apparent protest at the Islamic Republic’s tougher punishments for women refusing to completely cover up.
The explicit footage shared on social media shows the defiant woman yelling at armed officers as she stands on the hood of their car in the busy streets of Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city.
She then climbs onto the car’s windshield where she sits and spreads her legs, video shared by Iranian journalist and activist Masih Alinejad shows.
A male officer holding an automatic weapon appears to refuse to touch the woman and detain her due to her nakedness, according to Euronews.
In one moment, the woman yells and angrily thrusts her arms in the air before the clip cuts out.
The woman’s husband told local media that she is now receiving care, according to The Sun.
Details about the incident remain scant, but online users claim she was protesting Iran’s increasingly conservative clothing restrictions on women, which have sparked numerous protests in the Islamic Republic.
Iran’s legislature passed a controversial strict new “chastity and hijab” bill in December that would introduce harsher punishments and fines for women and girls exposing their hair, arms and legs.
The bill was ultimately put on hold after sparking international outrage from activist groups and human rights organizations, including Amnesty International who accused Iran of “seeking to entrench the already suffocating system of repression.”
Under the new law, repeat offenders and those who openly defied the rules would face hefty fines and prison sentences of up to 15 years in jail, according to the BBC.
It would also order that businesses report anyone who violates the rules to authorities.
In November, viral video showed a young college woman stripped down to her bra and panties in the courtyard of Tehran’s Azad University – and then her soon being shoved by men into a car and being driven away.
The student was protesting security forces who had ripped her clothing earlier while confronting her for not wearing a headscarf, which Iranian law demands for all women – Music or not — in public, Iran International reported.
Iran’s repressive laws for women’s dress have been a point of contention with the Islamic regime since the 1979 Iranian revolution.
The outrage came to a violent head in 2022 when Mahsa Amini died in custody after being arrested for hijab violations, sparking national protests in which security forces killed more than 550 people and arrested thousands more.
