Woman pays $3,200 a month for studio apartment with no oven

A woman who pays $3,200 a month for her New York City studio apartment has left the internet in an uproar after revealing that the home’s kitchen is so tiny, it doesn’t have room for an oven.

Avery Addison took to TikTok to showcase one of the most unusual aspects of her West Village studio apartment after seeing another content creator post a video of her ultra small bathroom.

In Addison’s video, which has amassed more than 1.7 million views, she conceded that the size of the space and lack of basic amenities might seem “crazy,” but insisted that it doesn’t bother her because she has so many incredible restaurants within walking distance of her home.

Speaking exclusively to Realtor.com®, Addison—who works in event production and has lived in the space for a “year,” said she knew that she would have to make compromises and sacrifices to live alone in Manhattan.

“Living alone on a $3,200 budget is nearly impossible in Manhattan,” she explained. “I knew going into my search, I was going to have to sacrifice something—either location or square feet or amenities.”

Addison shared that when she toured the apartment, she fell in love with almost every other aspect of its design, including its charming structure and plum location. Many of the architectural designs also caught her eye.

“I chose this apartment because it had a very open living area, and all the prewar charm the West Village is known for,” she said.

“I was looking for exposed brick, faux beams, wood flooring, fire escape and a fireplace—and this gem delivers! It’s also overlooking a courtyard, not the street, which makes the unit extra quiet, a huge selling point.”

Although she fell in love with its aesthetic and history, Addison admitted that seeing the tiny kitchen for the first time was a “shock.”

“The kitchen is a shock, but I’ve learned to adjust and make peace with it. Honestly, the kitchen size was low on my priority list anyways, so it didn’t deter me from signing,” she explained.

However, the minuscule cooking area has forced Addison to adopt some new habits—and drop any hope of baking a pie or casserole anytime soon.

“It was just a quirky feature to me. In the kitchen, I keep it really simple. There’s no oven. Investing in a cutting board that goes over the sink is the only way I can use the space,” the Manhattan-based content creator revealed.

She also admitted that she spends the majority of her time at the nearby restaurants, meaning she doesn’t actually have to cook.

Another advantage to the tiny kitchen space? It’s helped to propel Addison to internet stardom after she shared a video of herself trying to move around inside the room.

“It’s barely wide enough for me to stand in it,” she joked in the clip, which she captioned: “I know it’s crazy but to me it’s worth it!! When you have the best restaurants in the world at your doorstep, who really needs a kitchen?”

She began filming the video in the main living area of her studio, explaining that she was sure she had the “smallest” cooking space in the city.

“I just saw a girl sharing what she thinks is New York City’s smallest bathroom, and I just have to make a video because I think I have New York City’s smallest kitchen,” she said at the beginning of the video.

First, she showed off her queen-sized bed, which was set up against a large window and had a chair on the other side of it.

Then, the content creator made sure to give her over 1,000 followers a warning about her tiny kitchen.

“We are in the West Village. We are in a studio. When you decide to live in the West Village, you are not signing up for square footage, you are not signing up for any amenities, no bells and whistles. Like bare minimum, what you are signing up for is access to the best neighborhood.

“In Manhattan, location is everything. What I wanted when I decided to live on my own and get a studio was to have a kitchen away from the living area,” she explained as she showcased her large fridge.

Addison then headed into the cuisine center, which had one sink, a mini dishwasher, and a microwave.

She then showed herself standing in the space, revealing that her legs were nearly touching the bottom cabinetry.

“It’s barely wide enough for me to even stand in it. I can barely turn,” she admitted.

“This is it, this is my only counter place,” she said, putting her hand on the sliver of white countertop, which was just bigger than the width of her hand.

At the end of the clip, Addison revealed that she doesn’t even have a stove. She only has a “hot plate.”

Realtor.com® listings reveal that studio apartment rentals in the West Village currently range from $3,000 to $6,500 a month.

According to Kitchen NYC, an average kitchen in Manhattan ranges from 80 to 200 square feet.

People on the web were shocked by Addison’s kitchen area, with many of them taking to the comments section to express their disbelief.

Many people branded the kitchen “insane” and referred to it as a “reheating and handwashing station.”

Meanwhile, others compared the space to an “RV kitchen.”
