WWE star CM Punk shreds Bears owners during Netflix broadcast
CM Punk dropped a pipe bomb on the Bears.
The WWE superstar and Chicago native ripped his hometown team’s ownership during the Netflix pregame broadcast of the Chiefs’ 29-10 win over the Steelers on Christmas Day.
The show’s hosts — Laura Rutledge and twins Devin and Jason McCourty — only laughed while Punk, real name Phil Brooks, went off on a rant that the NFL surely did not appreciate.
“Nothing’s going to change until the McCaskeys sell the team. I said it,” Punk said.
“Live on Netflix,” Devin said with a laugh.
Punk continued: “We’re live on Netflix, I don’t care. I’ve been there. Oh, Lovie Smith is going to change the Bears. Oh, [Mitchell] Trubisky is going to change the Bears. Then we trade up and we lose [Patrick] Mahomes.”
Jason then seemed to realize a great talker had his stride, especially with Punk referencing how the Bears famously passed on Mahomes for Trubisky in the 2017 NFL draft in a league-defining move.
“We’re going to just walk off the set and let you rant,” Devin said.
Punk responded: “Mahomes right now, no, he’d be on the Bears, sorry.”
The Bears are an easy punching bag right now amid their struggles with No. 1 pick Caleb Williams and the team searching for yet another coach.
Some are unsure if Williams is the future, and the 4-11 Bears, who are eliminated from the playoffs, are now 38 years into their championship drought.
The long-term failures has put the McCaskey family in the spotlight, with 101-year-old Virginia Halas McCaskey serving as the principal owner and George H. McCaskey installed as the chairman.
Losing franchises tend to be held back by poor ownership and Punk and others sure seem to believe the McCaskey family deserves plenty of blame.
“I’m a Chicago sports fan,” Punk said. “And ladies and gentlemen, it doesn’t get any lower than that right now.”
Noted Bears superfan Dan “Big Cat” Katz of Barstool appreciated Punks’ remarks.
“Thank you @CMPunk,” he tweeted along with a clip of the rant.
The NFL surely did not thank Punk, who was appearing as a tie-in to Netflix becoming the home of WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” starting Jan. 6.
Sports leagues do not want their owners being eviscerated on national platforms and those watching the show saw Punk calling for the owners to move on.
The sentiment in Chicago would surely be different had the Bears drafted Mahomes, who has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowls and has secured the AFC’s No. 1 seed in search of the NFL’s first three-peat.
